For some Kenyans, corona virus has hit hard. It was all abrupt. Especially for young entrepreneurs and entry-level workers. So many will likely face unemployment by the time it is all over. The decision is harder for employers. Imagine having to tell a father – probably the sole breadwinner in his family – that he has no job.
Earlier this week, I ended up having a heated argument with a friend. He had a breathtaking view of the corona outbreak in Kenya. He is an entrepreneur who owns a local restaurant/kiosk around where I live. He argued that corona is only affecting the rich. That it cannot touch a common “mwananchi” like him, giving an example of how big hotels are registering losses while his sales are not affected.
He was wrong about it all. He came on board after I showed him how the disease was affecting everyone elsewhere in developed countries such as Italy.
The poverty levels in Kenya is alarming, where 36.1 % of the population live below the poverty line. The majority live from hand to mouth. With little to zero savings and only enough to push them through. Yet, many stand to lose their jobs in the wake of the corona virus global pandemic. Some already have lost jobs.
An example, flower firms in Naivasha had no choice but to send over one thousand employees home after registering huge losses. Also, restaurants are facing a hard time as the number of customers declines drastically. The fear is that if the situation persists, they will have no choice but to downsize. Meaning, people may end up losing their jobs.
Below is an exciting take concerning the possible loss of employment or having to deal with unpaid leave.
Accept Whatever Comes
There were mixed reactions after the government of Kenya announced the first corona case. People were confused, and everybody had different takes. Like my friend mentioned above, many did not take it seriously. Weeks following, the government implemented drastic measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Now, it is evident to many Kenyans that the disease is real and is deadly. The measures implemented stand to affect everyone. However, they are a necessary evil to help us all. As a citizen, there is little you can do about it. The best take is not to beat yourself up
over matters you have no control over. If you end up losing your job, try and understand in as much as it is hard. Avoid going on the downward drain and, instead, take the chance to rejuvenate yourself. Be sure all this will pass, and things will go back to normal in due time.
Connect with People
Tied up with so much to do in our schedules, we lack time to associate with other folks. Or probably, the “I am busy” excuse is a scheme people have come up with to avoid certain people. However, as of now, this excuse will backfire on most.
The Kenyan government imposed a curfew from 7 pm – 5 am as of 28th March 2020. Besides that, as a precautionary measure, social gatherings such as churches have been banned. You are left with no choice but to stay at home.
Without a doubt, you will have to associate with your family, and check up on your friends. Take advantage of this opportunity given to know them better. Get to enjoy each other’s company.
More so for lovers, it is a time to reignite your spark. As you spend time together, get to know each other better.
Grow your Skill
It was by default that you had to spend time with family. Well, unless you a bachelor or a spinster living alone. But still, you realize that concerned family and friends will check up on you.
So putting effort to bond with them more will help you push through. However, at the end of it all, no one but you can help yourself. Not sure that sentence made sense. What I am trying to say is that you should work on you. Take the opportunity of this time and do the things you always wanted to do. All projects you kept on postponing.
Yet, this concept might prove hard, mainly if your project entails social gatherings, or requires you to do extensive research on the field. But, don’t let that be a limiting factor. Start with the little you have. And what you need to do is acquire knowledge.
There are numerous books online you can download and read. With the right knowledge, implementing your goals will not be hard. And you do not necessarily have to limit your reading to your subject. Diversify. Here is how best to choose the books to read.
- Choose books on self-growth
- Ask friends for suggestions of books
- Find an autobiography on someone you admire
- Look for an exciting novel
- Read news articles, and interesting blog posts.
Readers are leaders. So, why not start now.
Take the time to relax
It is also an excellent time to relax. A cliché saying it may be, but indeed work with no play makes jack a dull boy. Find fun things to do.
You are obliged to be indoors by seven in the evening; as a result, your choices of fun activities are limited, but you still have many to choose. You may relax and watch a movie, listen to music, or play board games with the family. Do anything to relax your mind.
The beauty of life is you do not know what is coming tomorrow. Living would lose essence if we all knew how the next day would unfold. Uncertainty makes us strive to better ourselves.
Hence, stay positive. Stay safe. Sanitize. Stay indoors if you can. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook @articles of life.
